BBC Adds Disclaimer to Dragons' Den Episode Due to Lack of Scientific Support for Product

In a recent episode of Dragons' Den, the BBC included a disclaimer regarding a product's lack of scientific backing, leaving the dragons somewhat disappointed.

The episode, aired on 4 April, featured a variety of entrepreneurs presenting their business ideas to the Dragons, ranging from a drinks company and a foot-playing drum kit to a nail painting tool. Among them was a company claiming to enhance libido.

For those unfamiliar with the term, libido refers to one's sex drive. Wesley Pierce and his fiancée Lottie entered the Den with their supplements, offering a 10 percent stake in exchange for investment.

During their pitch, Wesley candidly shared that the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdowns had affected their intimacy, prompting them to create Wiggy – a drinkable supplement aimed at reigniting passion. They researched natural ingredients online to formulate their product and collaborated with a local company to bring it to market.

Since its launch in September 2022, Wiggy has sold approximately 450 units, generating £13,000 in sales through its online platform. However, the Dragons expressed skepticism about the product's scientific basis.

Questions arose about the evidence supporting the 'libido-boosting' claims, with the Dragons highlighting the lack of expert research provided. Wesley acknowledged that their decisions were partly based on personal experiences and admitted they were still in the early stages of establishing the brand.

Although Wesley cited positive feedback from customers, Dragons like Steven Bartlett pressed for quantitative or primary research to validate the product's efficacy. Wesley conceded that while some ingredients were not scientifically proven, they believed in the supplement's potential.

Touker Suleyman emphasized the importance of scientific credibility, suggesting that a stronger scientific foundation would enhance the product's appeal to investors.

As a result of the episode's discussions, the BBC included a health disclaimer during the Wiggy pitch, advising viewers to consult a medical professional before using dietary supplements, particularly if they have health concerns.

The episode serves as a reminder of the rigorous standards and scrutiny faced by products seeking investment on platforms like Dragons' Den, highlighting the significance of scientific validation in the health and wellness industry.
