Changes at Black Forest Games Amid Embracer Group’s Ongoing Restructuring

Changes are underway at Black Forest Games in Offenburg, Germany, as reported on January 24, according to a source cited by Kotaku. While the creative directors and most managers are expected to stay, more details will be revealed next week.

Black Forest Games, founded in 2012 and acquired by Embracer operating group THQ Nordic in 2017, has over 100 employees. They're known for popular titles like the Destroy All Humans! Remakes and the much-anticipated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin.

This news follows reports about the potential closure of Piranha Bytes, another German studio under THQ Nordic, as part of Embracer Group’s larger restructuring efforts.

Last June, Embracer announced a restructuring program, which included studio closures, staff layoffs, and project cancellations.

In the subsequent months, studios like Volition, Campfire Cabal, and Free Radical Design were closed. There were reports of Gearbox being put up for sale as well.

This restructuring affected over 900 employees during the company’s second financial quarter. Notable studios such as Crystal Dynamics, Beamdog, Zen Studios, and Fishlabs were impacted. In the months that followed, there were further layoffs at New World Interactive, 3D Realms, Slipgate Ironworks, and a significant portion of Gearbox support studio Lost Boys Interactive.

Please note that the changes at Black Forest Games are part of a larger industry shift, and we hope for the best for all those affected.
